In 2020, Germany‘s population declined. The country has around 100,000 fewer inhabitants at the start of 2021 compared to a year earlier.

The drop in immigration, linked to travel restrictions during the Covid-19 pandemic, is largely responsible for this drop. But the country’s aging is also accelerating, and mortality has already exceeded birth rates for a long time.
