Kuwait is a state located in the Middle East, north of the Arabian Peninsula, on the Persian Gulf. Its neighbors are Saudi Arabia to the south and Iraq to the north and west.
A modest emirate, Kuwait has huge oil resources and is part of OPEC. These resources have fueled the greed of both Iraq, which demanded the return of this former Iraqi province in 1990 by forcibly annexing it, and Western countries backed by the UN. The first “Gulf War” in 1991 drove the Iraqi military out of Kuwaiti soil.
